RED ZONE
Inspired by some of my experiences living 50m from the residential redzone in Christchurch New Zealand.
Home - 'How's your house?' The question that has been asked endless times since the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011
and continues for many residents today. No matter how varied residents
experiences of the earthquake everyone shared a focus on home. A
redzone trio would not be complete without recognizing the importance of
home in Christchurch residents' experiences.
Pīwakawaka
(fantail) - An unexpected bonus of living near the redzone is the
proliferation of birdlife. As people moved out the birds (and rodents)
moved in. We have seen more pīwakawaka in the past few years than ever
before, and we have had other avian visitors, such as spur-wing plovers,
as well. A nearby cricket ground is reverting to swamp land and the
geese love to visit.
Californian poppy - Around Christchurch
people have scattered wildflower seeds. If you live here, or have
visited, you will understand how confronting an empty section or scar on
the land after demolition can be. Sometimes the demolition and
clear-up is completed quickly, but more often most of the job is
completed but piles of 'building mince' remain for a long time reminding
everyone of how things have changed. Even where wildflower seeds have
not been scattered, many flowers pop up and californian poppies have
shown themselves to be hardy and prolific in the redzone nearby. They
are little flashes of brilliant colour in a muted landscape and we love
to spot them, and other wee gems of flowery colour.
Also available in sets of single design, round buttons, and pendants.

There is a very special little boy, named Albie, who has a special heart.
When I dreamed up this button, Albie jumped into my mind. He's inspirational like that!
So, for the month of July 75% of all sales of my new button, To the moon Captain Albie! will be donated to Heart Kids NZ.

Little Yellow Duck Project.
This
project sounds like one for me - Yellow ducks, random acts of kindness
and giving the gift of life - wonderful! My crochet skills are fairly
fledgling, but I'm going to give it a whirl and see if I can make
a little yellow duck to 'hide' in a public place. I will use the
pattern provided on the website. I also have a set of five little
yellow duck buttons to give away this week.
http://thelittleyellowduckproject.org/
"What is the Little Yellow Duck Project?
The Little Yellow Duck Project involves people around the world
handcrafting little yellow duck gifts as random acts of kindness that
are left in public places for others to find. A special tag on each one
invites the finder to take their gift home to brighten their day and to
visit this website to register where they found their gift. We hope that
the stories and information found here will encourage them to pledge
their own random act of kindness by registering to donate blood, bone
marrow, organs tissues."
Send me an email titled 'Little Yellow Duck Project' before 8pm on Friday
2nd May and you are in with a chance to win a set of five Buttons by
Benji yellow duck buttons (background colour of your choice). One entry per person please.
It's competition time. Once again I was inspired by the view outside my window... and on my walks... and whenever I drive anywhere... It's pretty hard not to see a road cone in Christchurch at the moment, unless you have your eyes closed!
So, for all the road cone lovers out there, you can win a set of eight road cone buttons. Details below.
If you're not a winner, you can still buy these buttons or any of my dozens of other designs. Check out all current designs on the Ready Right Now page.
How to enter.
Entries close on the 30th April at 8pm (New Zealand time). I will notify winners shortly after that.
Simply email me on fuzzimama@hotmail.com with the first name of the entrant and the city or town that they live in. If you would like to enter for more than one person (for example for two children or several grandchildren), please email me individually with each name, and then it's easier for me to use random number generator to draw the winners.
There will two sets of 8 road cone buttons to be won. The first will be especially for entrants living in Christchurch - because they have to deal with more road cones than you can possibly imagine if you don't live here! The second is for everyone else.
I went to Paris and I saw...
... pretty things...
...and bicycles, lots of bicycles.
Tour Eiffel and the Mona Lisa. Christmas markets, tubs of lollipops as tall as a five year old and more sparkly lights than you can possibly imagine.
It was wonderful.
Happy New Year! Buttons for sale are over in the Ready Right Now section.
Look what we made! Thanks Sharon, Karen, Vanessa and Johanna for your help knitting for the wee bubs in Wellington NICU this Christmas.
